I do this but I do it the week before the exam. By then they should have a handle on the books they plan to use for question 3. I will do it earlier next year as our spring break is the week before the AP exam in 2011. Nadine

Very cool idea. I am going to work on getting this in to my curriculum. I think it would be very effective at teaching them they have to be ready for anything! Thanks for sharing.

How do YOU teach rhetorical analysis? 3 Replies

Wondering if any seasoned AP English Language teachers have ideas about training students for essay #3, Rhetorical Analysis. I was planning to give students passages to read, along with (initially) "…

Google Reader 2 Replies

Is anyone using Google Reader (or another RSS reader) to help students keep up on current events and read about them from different perspectives? If yes, how did you get them started?

Some questions on exam 1 Reply

I'm a new AP teacher and I have a couple of questions. Can students use a nonfiction work on question 3 (I'm thinking of books like Tuesdays with Morrie)? If a student is unsure of a multiple choice…

Poetry

This is my first year teaching AP Literature. I attended an AP workshop this fall and received some fun ideas on teaching poetry. Now that I'm beginning my poetry unit, I would like some ideas and advice on some of the poems that you have used. I'm going to start with a series of poems on blackberries. I like the idea of thematic poems (especially with food). Suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

One of my best ideas this year

Independent Reading Assignment

One of my best ideas this year was to have students choose novels to read and study on their own. I got several first quarter "projects" that exceeded my expectations. I had not seen before how students could apply what we're learning in general about literature to their own study. I had always thought that we needed to go through texts as a whole group. I still think there is value in whole c… Continue

After a week

After a week of pre-assessments I have discovered I have lots of work to do - but being organized and having an online class to more quickly disseminate information I feel confident I can do more, with less time.

The writing is definitely a target - students need to understand how to read the prompt and answer it properly, instead of engaging in tangents when they don't know what to write.
