Welcome to AP English

How to participate:

Forum vs. Blog
Use the forum for questions for the whole group. If your question is better suited to a group, post it in the group.

Create Blog posts for your longer, reflective writing. A blog is like an article, and not a good place to post a question.

Your own space
Please edit your own page. You can change the look (to reflect your individual preferences). You can even add widgets. Your page reminds you of your discussions, and more.

Also, consider using an avatar or an image of yourself in your profile so we can enjoy a more visual sense of community.

Welcome to this ning! Have fun.

There are some other issues at play here, I think. I know that we are preparing kids for an AP test, but more importantly, I am preparing them for college. If they can share papers with their peers in college, I think they are more likely to do it...

As a techie person, I'm all for paperless classrooms, but . . . since students cannot yet type their essays for the AP exam, is it wise to let them type papers for our class?

One of my best ideas this year

Independent Reading Assignment

One of my best ideas this year was to have students choose novels to read and study on their own. I got several first quarter "projects" that exceeded my expectations. I had not seen before how students could apply what we're learning in general about literature to their own study. I had always thought that we needed to go through texts as a whole group. I still think there is value in whole c… Continue

After a week

After a week of pre-assessments I have discovered I have lots of work to do - but being organized and having an online class to more quickly disseminate information I feel confident I can do more, with less time.

The writing is definitely a target - students need to understand how to read the prompt and answer it properly, instead of engaging in tangents when they don't know what to write.

AP Certification

I just took a 4 day seminar and got certification to teach AP Literature. Was there an actual requirement that I have this certification in order to teach in high school? In order for the AP Board to recognize the class and let students take the test at the end of the year. I ask this, because I think I could teach the Language and Composition (rhetoric) AP class without having to take the seminar.

does anyone know?
